Premature Goat Watching

You all know how it is..you think the time is getting near for your goat to have her babies and you start watching for those little signs. The longer it takes the more you watch, and look and feel...waiting.

I kept asking The Boy,seen here in these cute goatie pictures,

if he was sure Doodah was due on the 8th...

Yeah,Mom..I am sure...

Then yesterday he says he checked his goat journal and that he was wrong and she has to somewhere around the 23rd! Kids !!!! And I don't mean the goatie kind!

Doodah is huge! I can't believe she still has that long to go ..I have been checking her tail ligs and they are still thick so I guess she does have a while yet...

She was none to thrilled about me getting these pictures,as you can tell from the look she was giving me, and  tried to waddle-run herself  away from me! Ha ha ..I can run faster that a fat goat!

I do apologize about the butt shots but you can only truly appreciate her girth from the back!

I keep asking The Boy if he is feeling like he is going to loose our bet that she is just having twins,I say at least 3! Well...I guess we will just have to wait a while longer yet to see who is the best goatie fortune teller!

We bought our goats in April 2009. Two sisters. One had kidded a buck 6 days earlier and the other was due the following month. The previous owners weren't sure of the breed date, so we just kept watching (for what I don't know-we had never done this before!). We were sure she was going to have twins from her size. We went out to check everyone around noon on May 31st and my then 3 year old son says, "mom-a baby goat!" We had missed the birth, but she still looked like there was another in there, so we sat around ALL DAY waiting to see the next one. All we saw was all the yuckly fluid that gets passed for the next 8 hours! I hope you get triplets, that'd be fun!

Poor Doodah, she is so huge! She doesn't look very comfortable, that's for sure, at least she doesn't have to worry about stretch marks. I hope you win the bet! What are the "stakes"? LOL

Life...

The "stakes" are that the looser buys the winner a milk shake from our local burger joint!

Kelly,
I have always read that goats are notorious for waiting for the minute you are not watching to have their babies!

I always swear Pricilla is going to pop out more than she does but last year she was as big as her goat house and then - only Kevin.

Pricilla,
These goats are tricky!

Here is what a friend of ours sent me as we sat and waited for China to kid starting Christmas 09. She kidded on Feb. 24th...
It's called The Does' Secret Code:

1- No kid shall be born until total chaos has been reached by all
involved. Your owner's house must be a wreck, their family hungry and
desperate for clean clothes, and their social life nonexistent.

2- "Midwives" must reach the babbling fool status before you kid out.
Bloodshot eyes, tangled hair and the inability to form a sentence mean
the time is getting close.

3- For every bell, beeper, camera or whistle they attach to you,
kidding must be delayed by at least one day for each item. If they use
an audio monitor, one good yell per hour will keep things interesting.

4- If you hear the words, "She's nowhere near ready. She'll be fine
while we're away for the weekend," Wait until they load the car, then
begin pushing!

5- Owner stress must be at an all time high! If you are in the care of
someone else, ten to fifteen phone calls a day is a sign you're
getting close.

6- When you hear the words "I can't take it anymore!" wait at least
three more days.

7 -You must keep this waiting game interesting. False alarms are
mandatory! Little teasers such as looking at your stomach, pushing
your food around in the bucket and then walking away from it, and
nesting, are always good for a rise. Be creative and find new things
to do to keep the adrenaline pumping in those who wait.

8- The honor of all goats is now in your hands. Use this time to
avenge all of your barn mates. Think about your friend who had to wear
that silly costume in front of those people. Hang onto that baby for
another day. OH, they made him do tricks too! Three more days seems
fair. Late feedings, the dreaded diet, bad haircuts, those awful
wormings can also be avenged at this time.

9- If you have fulfilled all of the above and are still not sure when
to have the kids, listen to the weather forecast on the radio that has
been so generously provided by those who wait. Severe storm warning is
what you're waiting for. In the heart of the storm jump into action!
The power could go out and you could have the last laugh. You have a
good chance of those who wait missing the whole thing while searching
for a flashlight that works!

10- Make the most of your interrupted nights. Beg for food each time
someone comes into the barn to check you. Your barn mates will love
you as the extra goodies fall their way too.

Liberty is very close I do believe to kidding. but she isn't anywhere near as big as your Doodah, she didn't look big enough to kid last time either and poof out came Justice! She carries her kids so slim...rest of our girls are like most they get huge LOL

Hope the Boy and blogger get it all straighted out.

I can not blame the girl for not wanting her picture taken. I must day photos of me while I was pregnant are few and far between... Scarce I say. :)

She has her dignity to uphold after all.
