Parade Day

It is that time of year again and being the county seat we host the county fair and parade! Now, if you consider we have a population of 600 and something that makes the fair and parade a big deal! Here in Coldspring that means we close down a state highway for an hour so our little parade can go through town!

(just a note...the Old  San Jacinto County Jail is haunted and it  has been documented by many paranormal investigators...maybe a visit and a post on that later!)

You may be wondering why it takes an  hour for a small town parade..well...we have the Battle of the Bands!

OK,it is just a battle of 2 bands because that is all we have in this county! It was still a great band performance!

Sadly, our town lost but I prefere to think of it as we came in second!

  Then came the ROTC....

I could have gotten closer to the parade for better pictures but I had me a piece of shade staked out and I wasn't about to give it up for the sake of better pictures! This is Texas folks, and it is still hot here!

Then there were many shiny trucks with pretty young girls, rodeo queens past and present and all the politicians wanting to be reelected and, of course, ya gotta have a firetruck!

Cute homemade floats full of cute kiddos!

And the FFA,every small towns favorite, well, after the football team!

Then my favorite ...the  trail riders! I was particularly fond of all the mules! Don't ask me why because I don't know why...but I like mules! I would have me one if I could some how justify needing one....but, between you and me, I ain't plowing the garden with a mule no matter how cool I think they are!

I am pretty sure we had more folks on horses and in wagons than spectators!

Most of the riders had just come of a trail ride here in our beautiful Sam Houston National Forest area...

We had our one trick rider who did the whole parade standing on his horse!

Was he brave or just plum crazy...you  decide!

So there you have it ,a glimpse into REALLY small town life !

I just love small town parades! Personally I think it's crazy riding a horse standing up. I certainly would love to hear about the haunted jail!

Pretty neat parade for a small town! Looks like fun! I love mules too, I have always wanted one. I don't know why either. :)

Very interesting...small town life is just fabulous. I grew up in a small town and believe I was so fortunate to be able to be part of the town life. Everyone knew everyone, pretty much. Again, thanks for this.
PS.. yes the Italian Greyhound said Ciao as he tore off down the hill...:-)

Got to love a parade! We don't have very many at all in these parts. Seems to pull the community together for a while. Thanks for sharing Melodie.

What a fun post! Learning more about small texas towns could become a hobby for me! It was a rainy day here in n. texas so I am glad you had such beautiful (though hot) weather for your parade. I hope you will tell more about your haunted jail!

are you sure that wasn't one we have here?? I especially like the trick rider...what a hoot! For the last 20 years here, we have a sheetrock worker who is about 70 yrs old but always dresses up like uncle Sam and walks down the street on 6 ft stilts with pants of red white blue that touch the ground....it really gets the little ones attention! Priceless to see the kids' first look at that when he searches for the littlest ones and shakes their hands!!
I love small town parades!!

You got a lot of pcitures-even from your shaded vantage point! The homecoming parade was Friday here and it went right by our house-that was a treat! Of course we were headed to the grocery store and the parade was going the same way so we had to take the long back route, but it was worth it to see what the kids had done.

PS-I deleted the birthday post-it was supposed to be on another blog and I thought I deleted it last night, but apparently not! We did have a great time though!

What great picures you got! and I do not blame you one bit for not giving up your shady spot!

The guy standing on the horse...Texas cowboy what can you say LOL...his horse must be VERY good natured!

I love mules too and can you believe my grandpa still used the mule to plow the garden when I was little! He had a tractor but he used the mule! Yep... but I am with you I am not so not plowing my garden with a mule ROFL...

Oh, your parade is very different from those we have here. We don't have many horses, no mules, but LOTS of firetrucks--LOUD firetrucks, which I hate. I'll take the mules and the guy standing on his horse over that any day!

Cool! Our fair is this week, but we don't have a parade. Looks like you live in a great small town.
