Lightening Strikes Thrice

Yes, it most certainly does ! Let me tell you all about my Thursday afternoon! I was sitting here on the computer when it begins to rain...not thunder and lightening ,just a nice gentle rain. Then out of nowhere ...BOOM!!!!  It was so loud it took my mind a second to register what had happened! I ran to the back door in time to see smoke and debris floating down from the sky...lightening had struck one of the big trees ,the second closest to the house! It is about 30 or 40 feet from the house and in the goat and turkey pen! It is the one in the middle of the picture right past the well...

I ran out to check the goaties and everyone was OK, a little rattled but thankfully fine! You can see the stripe where it blew off the bark...

There was an outside light hung on this tree, it was blown to pieces!

This is the 3rd time in a little over 3 years that we have had lightening hit within a ..hmm..I'd guess about a 50 ft radius from the house! Right before we moved in lightening got another tree on the far side of the goat yard and after we had been here about a year it got the transformer on the pole about 20 feet from the house!  This time it fried my internet router, actually just the power cord, even though everything is plugged in to surge protectors, the air conditioning unit and Hubby's dog's electric fence! Oh, and blew out a breaker that goes to Hubby's shop! The AC is going to be the whopper...sigh.It will be covered under our homeowners insurance but we have a big deductible. Plus we will loose another of our lovely big trees. That is the victim  in the center of the picture...

Well, the good thing for the day was I finally was able to kill the chicken snake that had been getting all my eggs for the last week! I can't remember if this is 8 or 9 chicken snakes  for this year... apparently I live on top of some sort of electrified snake pit!!!

Criminy! That is some scary stuff!! Too bad that lightening didn't fry all the chicken snakes--bad boys that they are. Glad you are safe, even if all your stuff is extra well-done. :(

Oh, wow, sooooo lucky it didn't hit the house! Let's hope 3rd time is the charm and it won't ever happen again! Glad it didn't hurt any of the animals, sorry about the tree though.

Chicken snakes.... devils!

This is why I am glad to be surrounded by mountains. Big, tall mountains.

Glad everybody (but the tree) is safe. I just hate when I lose a big tree. Glad you got the snake too!

Lucky it wasn't worse...if that's any consolation!
Chicken snakes? I don't want to know about them! I am such a city slicker!
Glad you liked the painting.

Jabacue,
They are Texas Rat Snakes, but if they make it to your coop they find eggs and baby chicks much easier to catch than rats and won't stop until you kill them.

dad says you were lucky that the tree did not explode onto the house. Hate to hear about the tree, makes a nice shade. With Texas hot weather shade trees around a home are a big plus.

First, I'm really glad to hear all living, footed things are fine. ♥

Second, the tree may be okay unless you want to take it down. We had a pecan tree at the retirement property that we were pretty sure was hit by lightning 3 years ago and it has made quite a comeback. If it starts to produce pecans like my husband remembers when he was growing up, we'll keep it. If not, well, pecan makes good firewook.

*hugs* on the damage. Sorry to hear about it.
At least you got the snake. *hugs* ♥

That is crazy. Now I'm scared because we have big trees around here and some are very close to the house. Glad you are OK and hope it all gets better soon.
Hooray for you and getting the chicken snake!!

that lightning needs to get back. A plus about living up here in the hills, it's cooler and we don't get those dramatic storms although I grew up in Raleigh, and remember them well, very scary.

So glad no one was hurt, but it caused a lot of damage. I suppose the tree will die or you will have to cut it down. Amazing that lightening strikes so many times around your house. Scary! Hope the kittens are finding homes. Thank you for commenting on my blog. :)

That tree looks like a wonderful oak. :(

Just awful to have so much lightening. Sounds kind of strange too. Maybe you've played all the odds now and you will be strike free! I hope so at least.

It sure seems like we have had a lot of thunder/lightening storms this year. Glad nobody was hurt!

two of my neighbors got a total of 3 trees in their yards(they live next to each other)hit during the same storm this spring.
One of them was on the porch when it happened, and it knocked him off his feet.
You ARE lucky. A friend of ours who has a horse farm about 20 miles from here lost 4 horses to lightning that hit near his metal barn. It was a huge tragedy.

Wow!! My neighbor has been stuck TWICE by lightening..(missing toes now). He is a little daffy sometimes, but actually it mellowed him out quite alot! :) Not that I encourage any standing out in a storm to experiment, I am so glad you ALL are OK! I can imagine that was one loud boom afterwards though! Can a person put some rods up to thwart off any other hits? Perhaps your sitting on a Silver Mine or better yet...Gold mine? and on the snakes?? YUK!! I find one and it makes me do double takes whereever I walk...ropes twigs and any brown thing sets me on edge at that point....Take Care!!
