Yikes!

Yesterday I was digging around in the canning jars in my shed and look what what I found!

It gave me a start! Now,I am not one of those folks who are afraid of snakes...I am not an idiot either,I have a healthy respect for them.

But finding one unexpected always makes my heart skip a beat  until my brain can register if it is poison or not! This one is a chicken snake! Usually we find giant ones in the chicken coop! This makes The Boy burst with happiness.
It usually goes something like,"Watch it Mom and don't let it get away! I got to go get my shot gun!"
That boy loves to shoot stuff...and blow up stuff...and well, you know...he's a boy!

We have a lot of problems with chicken snakes getting our eggs and baby chicks. I am not one of those, aww.. they have a right to be here too, people. If they stay in the woods they can have all the rights they want. When they come on my farm and eat my baby chicks, which takes food away from my family, that is an act of war and they must die.Yes,I know they eat mice...well,so does my weenie dog! Now,I don't really believe in killing for the sake of killing  so I didn't waste him,noooo..I fed him to the chickens! Poetic justice I think!

That just gave me a snort..."fed him to the chickens" certainly a what comes around goes around approach. I have a neighbor boy who loves to be the erradicator for me. There is a place for snakes..just not in my backyard either!

Way cool, that is a Texas Rat snake. I find lots of them here and have rescued a few.

Those get quite big, the largest one we have found was nearly 6 feet long. What cracks me up about those snakes is, they will raise up and hiss at you like a cobra. I was helping one get untangled once, it hissed and struck at me, I fell over backwards from the milk crate I was sitting on; scared the mess right out of me.

LOL I am a fraidy cat....

Nekkid Chicken,

I read you link and I think the writer must not have raised poultry! I find them all the time stuffed full of my eggs and chicks! If it weren't for the fact we raise poultry I would let them on their merry way too!

I hate snakes. Wasn't like that until a few years ago. I reached under a hen to collect eggs. Her leg felt really swollen, scaly, and something was tickling my hand. I tilted her with my other hand to have a look. Found that my hand was holding a black rat snake. It was tickling my hand with its tongue. Later found that it was 7 feet long and full of eggs. Its life ended that day and any other snake that gets in henhouse gets the same fate.

He sure was a pretty boy. I happen to love snakes. I am a weird one, I know. We don't have many here that I have seen. The cats have brought me some garter snakes.
When we were campground hosting we saw some rubber boas; they were really pretty. I know we have rattlers here but they are on the other side of the river and I haven't seen one yet.

I can't even imagine finding one of those! But rest assured, I'd find a way to kill it if it was eating my eggs or my chickens!

Oh my goodness. Snake...I don't like them. As luck would have it, being a city dweller these days, I don't see them. Glad this one won't eat your baby chicks.

Yep! Finding one of these when you're looking for something in the shed sure will make you jump out of your skin. I'm sure the chickens enjoyed their protein today!

ewwwwww shudder shudder ... holy smokes give one a heart attack... yep I am realllllllly afraid of snakes... spiders okay I can deal with that, bugs okay fine ... snakes no no no ... wow girly he looked big!!

I do think that is fair you fed him to the chickens since they prey on chickens... well like you say you play you pay...he should have stayed in the woods...

We had a beautiful Spring day here but hear it's not staying long.

I haven't found one in the chickens coops but, I would have to either move it down the road a few miles. Or destroy it, though as snippy as the last one I found, it would meet the business end of a shovel probably.
